EDGAR Next
What is EDGAR Next?
EDGAR Next refers to the modernization of the SEC’s EDGAR system which adopted a series of rules and form amendments on September 27, 2024, focused on enhanced security, streamlined enrollment and improved filer access and account management.
EDGAR Next Key Changes
- Filers can enroll in EDGAR Next. Filers who already have Access Codes will need to create a Login.gov with multifactor authentication (MFA). If Filer already has a login.gov account, they can sign in to EDGAR Filer Management using their existing email address and password.
- Individuals who enroll filers can act as account administrator. A filer must maintain at least two account administrators, one, if a single‑member entity.
- Admins will receive email to sign in to EDGAR Filer Management and accept the “Role” within a certain timeline.
- When enrolled CCC will change and Filers must make a copy for their records.
- Admins may DELEGATE a Filing Agent such as EDGAR Solutions to file on their behalf. When delegating a Filing Agent they would need FA’s CIK.
- Filers are required to renew their login.gov EDGAR Account every 12 months and accept annual confirmations.
- Existing Filers who do not enroll by December 19, 2025 or have lost access to their account will have to resubmit a new FORM ID.
- New Filers starting on March 24, 2025, can submit a Form ID and will be automatically enrolled in EDGAR Next.
Timeline for Enrollment
Dates | Enrollment Open/Closed | Benefits of Enrolling | Consequences of Not Enrolling |
---|---|---|---|
March 24, 2025 – September 12, 2025 | Open | Enrolled filers may use APIs and will be able to continue filing uninterrupted as of September 15, 2025 (the compliance date for EDGAR Next). | Unenrolled filers cannot use APIs and may experience interruptions in filing as of September 15, 2025. No consequence to current filing ability: All filers may continue to file according to the current process during this time period, whether or not they are enrolled. |
September 15, 2025 — December 19, 2025 | Open | As soon as filers enroll, they may file, access their EDGAR accounts, and use APIs. | Cannot file or access EDGAR accounts until enrolled. |
December 22, 2025 — forward | Closed | N/A | Cannot file or access EDGAR accounts. Filers must apply for access on Form ID and await outcome of SEC staff review. If SEC staff grants the Form ID, filers will be able to file, access their EDGAR accounts, and use APIs. |
What is Enrollment?
- Enrollment is a streamlined process that allows EDGAR filers to transition to EDGAR Next without presenting a Form ID, notarized documents, or a power of attorney to SEC staff.
- Enrollment is required for all EDGAR filers who wish to continue filing uninterrupted on EDGAR.
- Filers whose amended Form ID applications are granted by SEC staff on or after March 24, 2025 will automatically be subject to EDGAR Next and do not need to enroll.
- Additionally, see SEC’s instructional video to prepare for enrollment.
Who Should Enroll the EDGAR Filer in EDGAR Next?
- A filer may enroll or may select anyone it trusts to enroll, including but not limited to the filer’s employee, filing agent or law firm or other trusted entity or individual.
- The individual who enrolls the filer on the dashboard must have Login.gov individual account credentials to access the dashboard. To obtain these credentials see create your login.gov.
- Additionally, see SEC’s instructional video Obtaining individual account credentials.
Filer Information Necessary to Enroll
1. The filer’s CIK, current Passphrase and CIK confirmation code (CCC):
- If a filer has not reset it’s CCC and/or Passphrase since September 2019, the filer should reset these codes prior to enrolling. See Instructions for filers that do not have current passphrase or CCC (needed to enroll)
2. The names of two account administrators the filer will authorize during enrollment, and each account administrator’s:
- Business address
- Business telephone number, and
- Email address—this email address must match the individual’s Login.gov individual account credentials
3. The quarter-end date by which it will perform annual confirmation on EDGAR either March 31, June 30, September 30 or December 31.
4. Information to indicate whether the filer is a single-member company (and therefore is only required to authorize one account administrator). SEC staff recommends that individual and single-member company authorize two account administrators during enrollment to avoid access and account management problems that may arise if the single account administrator is unavailable.
What is NOT Needed to Enroll
- No power of attorney is needed to enroll.
- Notarization is not required.
- Form ID is not part of the enrollment process.
EDGAR Next—Improving Filer Access and Account Management
According to the SEC (Sept 8, 2023), EDGAR Next replaces the traditional filer’s portal with a modern system which results in improvements for all filers:
- Enhanced Security Authentication upgrades: Every filer requires individual Login.gov credentials with MFA.
- Streamlined Enrollment: Filers no longer need notarization or power of attorney; processing is faster and approvals take effect same day.
- The new Filer Management Dashboard provides centralized: user-friendly interface for access and role management.
- APIs: Optional machine-to-machine submission streamlines high-volume or automated filings.
